SAG-AFTRA Mobilizes Against Unregulated AI from Warner Bros, Epic Games, EA and Other Publishers
SAG-AFTRA begin strike over disputes on AI protections for motion capture performers in video games.
Last year, SAG-AFTRA and WGA went on strike for 118 days in pursuit of a fair labor contract for Hollywood writers and actors. It was the first time in 63 years these two camps joined in a strike together.
We’re now facing another major strike. This time against video game publishers who are refusing to protect voice actors and motion capture workers equally against the unregulated use of artificial intelligence.
Just to clarify, AI has been used in video games for decades now. However, recent advancements in AI have made it possible for studios like Epic Games, EA, Warner Bros., Activision, and Walt Disney Co. to replicate the likeness of voice and motion capture actors without consent or fair compensation.
In a recent article from Aftermath, a SAG-AFTRA chief contracts officer confirmed that the main issue involves AI protections not being extended to motion capture performers. For example, any performers used to capture game character animations wouldn’t be protected with the current language in the agreement. This puts thousands of performers at risk of being made obsolete because studios can just replicate these with AI.
As streamers and content creators, it is important that we do our part to support these performers so they get a fair deal. Here are some ways you can help today:
Share What is Happening - The simplest way you can help is by using your platform as a streamer. Let your viewers know what is happening and why it is important for us to support the strike.
Keep Playing Games - At this time, SAG-AFTRA is not asking creators to stop streaming struck video games. They are encouraging us to continue streaming the games we enjoy!
Use These Hashtags - When speaking about the strike, include #LevelUptheContract and #VideoGameStrike in your messages to show support and solidarity.
