Overcoming The Fear of Making Content
I'd be lying if I didn't admit to feeling fear and anxiety as a content creator. Even after streaming three years on Twitch, I STILL need to take a deep breath before hitting the GO LIVE button.
Investing time in getting comfortable in front of the camera and writing scripts and articles have really help me overcome some of that initial fear that would normally paralyze my ability to create content.
Still, I know that this is a real barrier for many content creators. Maybe as you read this now, you're thinking of all the things you've "planned" to do and never quite got around to.
First of all, I want you to know that it is OK and you shouldn't feel ashamed for not creating content. Trust me, my PC is filled with half-written blog posts, partially edited videos, and lists of content ideas I never revisited.
Every content creator is different and therefore their journey will always be unique to them. But I'd love to offer some lessons I've learned in my steps to fulfilling my creative passions.
Avoid Over Consuming Content
This is something I struggled with for a long-time. In my pursuit to become a content creator, I felt it was important to absorb as much content as possible.
It is true that some content consumption can be super helpful. Researching a specific niche, video topics, and creators in the same space can help you craft your own unique vision.
However, consuming TOO MUCH information can be a form of procrastination.
I am guilty of spending too much time watching content from other creators rather than creating myself.
YouTube and Twitch would often consume my day and I wouldn't spend anytime actually ideating or recording myself.
After I identified this weakness, I established a methodology to help me focus on creating my own content.
Fear is a Prerequisite for Courage
You might think that the pathway to success is to eliminate fear altogether, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Eliminating a real human emotion is impossible. Everyone feels fear, even those content creators you look up to. That doesn’t magically go away once you get a multi-million dollar deal with Twitch.
To be courageous, fear must be present. In spite of your fear, you must have the courage to take action. For some, that might mean feeling more comfortable in front of a camera. For others, it might mean starting that podcast on your favorite topic. Whatever that hurdle is, find courage to overcome it. Start with small victories before you attempt anything that might be too overwhelming.
Evolving as a Creator
If you wind the clock back and look at any popular creator's first few videos, you'll notice the same thing. They are all shit.
Low quality video. Lack of camera presence. Boring content.
The truth is that by starting in the first place, they are already far more successful than most would-be content creators. All because they just started.
If you're looking at your previous videos and feel discouraged that they aren't performing well or aren't attracting a new audience, it is OK. This is part of the process.
As you continue to create, your content, style, and quality will evolve. Your videos don't have to be perfect, they just have to be. Over time, you'll learn what works and what doesn't. Strive to improve your videos by 1% with every upload or every stream. Then, look back a few months later and see how much you've grown.
Happy Streaming,
