Golden Kappa Trains Are Here, But No One Really Cares Right?

Last week, Twitch announced the Golden Kappa Train, a limited-time opportunity for viewers to earn a special emote. While nothing about this is inherently BAD, I think the comments on this tweet speak for themselves…

Streamers continue to show frustration with Twitch’s inability to understand creator needs. Every time Twitch offers a new “feature”, streamers justifiably bombard the comments with the REAL questions, like the sub revenue split and improving discoverability on the platform. At this point in time, Twitch and it’s new CEO Dan Clancy have offered nothing to satisfy those questions.

AND IT GETS WORSE

Recently, Zach Bussey, who covers streamer news, tweeted out questioning the rationale of subathons on Twitch. His conclusion was that subathons are basically dead.

According to his research, streamers are not earning what they expect to earn after receiving gifted subs. Why? Localized Pricing. According to Twitch’s own website it states:

Twitch subscription prices are adjusted to better reflect the cost of living where a subscriber lives.

Localized pricing has been around for a while now and it does have its benefits for the viewers. However, it begs the question: What are Twitch’s immediate goals and do any of those goals benefit its creators?

When I see Twitch staff promoting a new emote that ultimately means nothing, and refuse to address legitimate concerns from its own community, it really makes you think about your priorities as a content creator.

I write this not to discourage you from streaming or scheduling your next subathon, but to think critically about where you invest your time as a creator. Twitch’s most recent platform updates have only hindered the broadcasters ability to earn a living as a content creator. If this trend continues, not only will more streamers leave the platform, but also expect viewers to move to other platforms for entertainment and community.
